UNDP and the Runday rally are teaming up to organize a series of 5-kilometer races that will be held simultaneously in 10 Ukrainian cities nationwide. The races will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 9 a.m.

Participation in the races is free and open to all. The 11 events are to be held simultaneously in Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv (in two locations - Truhaniv Island and the Obolon district of the capital), Kolomyia, Kramatorsk, Lviv, Mariupol, Odesa, Severodonetsk, Ternopil and Kharkiv.

To participate in a race, entrants have to register at the Runday website, where they can select the nearest of the 11 locations to them and get a participant's QR code.

"The Race for Peace and Equality" is dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular to two Goals that are particularly relevant to Ukraine - Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. So in addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle, the national race is intended to promote solidarity among Ukrainians and stimulate joint efforts to build peace and create equal opportunities for all.

In April-May this year, UNDP-supported Runday initiatives were launched in five new locations, including Kramatorsk, Mariupol, Severodonetsk, Kharkiv and Kolomyia. Runs in these and other locations will continue to take place every Saturday.

This initiative is being implemented with the support of the UNDP with funding from the European Union, the governments of Switzerland and Sweden, and in partnership with UN Women within the framework of Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme.

About the Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals, otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The SDGs came into effect in January 2016, and they will continue guide UNDP policy for the next 15 years. As the lead UN development agency, UNDP is uniquely placed to help implement the Goals through our work in some 170 countries and territories.

Achieving the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to make sure we leave a better planet for future generations.

About Runday

Runday is an event based on the popular sports initiative parkrun, which originated in the UK in 2004 and has since spread internationally. It essentially entails holding 5-kilometer races every Saturday that anyone who is interested can take part in, regardless of their age or physical ability. The results of the runs are recorded on the Runday website, so each participant can view their own time, monitor their progress, or compete with their friends.

In Ukraine, Runday has held 402 races over the last two years, and Runday participants have run a total of 28,920 kilometers.
