Civil society for better democracy – call for proposals

CSO hubs

Are you part of a civil society organization based in Ukraine? Do you have an idea for a project that can improve dialogue between civil society organizations and government bodies? Do you think you can implement your project within a year and with a UNDP grant of no more than 30,000 USD?

We are looking for proposals that:

  • Consider more effective ways of using the already existing tools for dialogue between CSOs and government bodies (for example, aim at citizen participation in decision-making at the local level and in the process of forming and using the funds of the local budgets; supporting the local initiatives, mechanisms of the local democracy, public control and government accountability; creating innovative tools for stimulating citizen engagement; advancing the reform agenda at the subnational level; engaging CSOs in the implementation of the National Strategy for Facilitation of the Civil Society Development at the subnational levels, and others);

  • Use the existing legal and regulatory frameworks to create new platforms for interaction, while ensuring the sustainability of such platforms after the end of the project;

  • Propose realistic and well-thought-out advocacy and lobbying activities to support changes in the existing legal and regulatory frameworks to improve the dialogue between CSOs and state entities.

Developments in Ukraine in recent years have drastically changed the political and security landscape, seriously affected the socio-economic situation, and presented new challenges to the Government of Ukraine. At the same time, these changes have been providing impetus for new efforts towards democratic governance reform and the fuller enjoyment of human rights in the country. Recent surveys by the GfK and Kyiv International Institute of Sociology show that currently 44% of Ukrainians do not perceive much progress in the implementation of reforms, while only 8% of citizens believe they have the capacity to influence the country’s situation.

In this context, an active civil society holds promise for promoting and sustaining long-awaited reforms. Civil society organisations have a central role to play in driving change, influencing legislation, restoring dialogue and trust with authorities and help build national unity.

The new five-year UNDP project supporting civil society, financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, will support a varying number of projects every year following calls for proposal. Learn more about the project and its priorities from its leaflet.
