Young Football Volunteers: Sport and Volunteering for MDGs

Project Summary

Part of two major national programmes “Youth of Ukraine” and “Let’s Do It Together”, the project contributes to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with particular focus on MDG 6 (combatting HIV, malaria and other diseases) as well as promotes social cohesion and healthy lifestyle among youth. Through harnessing the social and educational potential of football and volunteerism, it engages 12-20 year-old young people living in rural areas of Kherson, Mykolaiv and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in the life and development of their community.

Project Goals

  1. Strengthen non-formal education through the development and integration of “Fair Play”/“Youth development through football” (YDF) methodology which  helps teachers in secondary schools and sport clubs to educate young people on life skills such as healthy lifestyles, HIV prevention, gender equality, and prevention of violence through playful and interactive forms of football play.
  2. Build capacities of schools, local institutions and youth organizations to effectively deliver non-formal education programmes aimed at improving young people's health and foster their civic engagement. Sport equipment is provided and local football tournaments are organized to support integration of YDF methodology in schools and sport clubs.
  3. Create an enabling environment for youth to promote and implement community-based, MDG-related projects through volunteerism. Coaches and young leaders are trained on how to develop and implement local initiatives as well as to engage young people in planning and implementing local development strategies through common action plans.

  • 345 coachers and volunteers promote youth’s healthy lifestyle and volunteerism through football in rural schools in targeted regions of Ukraine.
  • Over 3.084 young people reached out through awareness campaigns and sports events on MDGs, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence prevention, gender equality and civic engagement.
  • 47 local initiatives addressing MDG-related issues in rural areas through volunteer participation methodology helped to increase the capacities of youth to engage in planning and development of their communities.
