Community based approach help Donetsk villagers to improve lives
Since 2008 Donetsk oblast has been among UNDP’s most active partners in applying community based approach to development in order to improve lives of thousands of local residents. Community Based Approach to Local Development Project, widely known as “CBA”, has been the largest UN development initiative in the oblast. The project is financed by the European Union and is helping rural communities residents to organize and join their efforts with local authorities in implementing micro-projects that solve local problems. Typically, the first priority in rural areas is ensuring that the local school, kindergarten or health clinic is more energy efficient. The second priority is water supply. Other initiatives include the purchase of a school bus or equipment for local health clinics, or ensuring proper waste disposal.
For the last five years of project implementation almost 90 rural communities have established community organizations and implemented more than a hundred micro-projects with a total cost 18.1 million Hryvna thus benefiting more than 130,00 people.
During her visit to Donetsk Oblast, Alessandra Tisot met with Mr. Fedoruk, Chairman of the Donetsk Oblast Council and thanked him for his support in the implementation of the CBA Project.
“CBA is an enabling platform that can not only support social projects but also to promote small business. We can pilot this initiative during the third stage of the project implementation”, - underlined the UN official.
“We have stressed the importance and actuality of this EU/UNDP Project on many occasions, especially within the context of potential contribution to positive transformations in all areas of state development triggered by the potential signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. We repeatedly emphasized the importance and relevance of the CBA Project to the oblast. Within its framework, the system of efficient and effective interaction between local councils and community organizations was successfully developed. It is aimed at designing local community development plans and their further active implementation”, - underlined Mr. Fedoruk.
