UNDP and National Institute of Strategic Studies to deepen cooperation
On November 27, National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISS) and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed Memorandum of Understanding that will deepen and strengthen the existing cooperation in the common areas of interest, in particular Ukraine’s achievement of Millennium Development Goals and the Global Post 2015 Development Agenda.
The agreement was signed by Alessandra Tisot, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, and Andrii Yermolaev, Director of the NISS.
The main purpose of this partnership is to support Ukraine’s development priorities through exchanging information, joint consultations and expert meetings and implementing joint policy development, research and educational projects.
The experts believe that enhanced cooperation between the President's Institute and UNDP will contribute to the social, economic and cultural development of the country, strengthening its civil society and promoting participatory democracy. This will also lead to streamlining of application of international standards and applying best practices of engagement between the government and civil society that will support the development of social cohesion and dialogue in Ukraine.
In line with the Memorandum the NISS and UNDP will join forces in promoting sustainable development and human security as well as supporting global and local climate change mitigation initiatives and programmes.
"Our proposed partnership, aimed at supporting the achievement of the country’s development priorities, is strategic by nature, not only because it allows combining international experience and best practice with in-depth knowledge and practical country development experience; it is strategic as it envisages a cooperation that is keen to try new grounds and to push for innovations in all areas,"- underscored Alessadnra Tisot addressing the Scientific Council of the National Institute of Strategic Studies.
Mr. Yermolaev emphasized the importance of ensuring that the conclusions of the Post 2015 Agenda report are proactively taken into account when developing a sustainable development model for Ukraine. He expressed his interest to build an expert platform on this topic.
The UNDP and the National Institute for Strategic Studies have been fruitfully partnering for a number of years, collaborating in particular in the context of the design of the long-term socio-economic development strategy of Crimea, strengthening the role of civil society in Ukraine. More recently, the relationship between the two organizations has intensified with the significant work the Institute and the UN system has jointly carried out to review the MDG progress, as well as to identify, through a wide and inclusive consultative process, key development priorities for Ukraine in the context of the post 2015 agenda.
