EU and UNDP start cooperation to support Verkhovna Rada with quality legislationJun 19, 2016
Kyiv, 17 June 2016 - The new EU/UNDP project “Rada for Europe” will focus on strengthening the capacity of the Verkhovna Rada to produce quality legislation and monitor its implementation, notably that of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and serve as a model and driving force for the reforms.
“Rada for Europe” will support the Verkhovna Rada in fulfilling its Constitutional duties, and will help the institution serve as a model and driver of Ukraine’s democratic reforms. The budget of the project is €1.3 million.
"Parliament is the heart of reforms in Ukraine. Ukraine needs a well-functioning, transparent and accountable legislative body that works to advance the reforms. This transformation is not only in the interests of EU-Ukraine cooperation, but especially in the interest of Ukrainian citizens," said Jan Tombiński, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.
“The Verkhovna Rada is at the core of Ukraine’s reform movement, with strong leadership fully committed to meet the highest European legislative standards. We, UNDP Ukraine, alongside the EU, are proud to be a part of the Rada’s journey towards transparency, good governance and reform. The implementation of this project, under the leadership of the Speaker, will help to bring the change that Ukrainians have demanded and deserve,” said Neal Walker, UNDP Resident Representative, UN System Coordinator.
The project will be implemented by the UNDP in close partnership with the European Parliament within the Administrative Cooperation Agreement signed in Brussels on 2 March 2016 between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the European Parliament.
Among the key priorities of the project are strengthening the Secretariat and Committee staff to enable them to provide effective, non-partisan services to the Ukrainian Parliament and MPs; and assure greater transparency of the Verkhovna Rada and more consistent communication and dialogue with the citizens.
