New place for recreation in summer: UNDP restores water reservoir in Chernihiv oblast

Jul 10, 2017

Kyiv, July 7, 2017 – A water reservoir, historically used for recreational purposes by local people, has been renovated and opened for leisure visitors in Kukshun village in the Chernihiv Oblast. With funding from the Coca-Cola Foundation and in the framework of “Creation of model for community sustainable development at Nizhyn rayon, Chernihiv oblast” project, UNDP has restored this water reservoir - measuring four metres in depth, thirty metres in width and three hundred metres in length. Prior to the renovations, the reservoir was empty and covered with one metre of silt. The banks were reinforced and the silt removed, now locals are able to enjoy the summer season at the newly-revived beach.

“Today we, jointly with our partners, are opening the restored recreational place at water reservoir in Kukshyn village, that was historically used by local people for swimming and fishing. Such an event would not have been possible without the financial resources provided by Coca-Cola Foundation, and strong commitment of local authorities,” said Vasyl Tolkachov, UNDP Project Manager.

The project aims at renovating the hydrological structure of Smolyanka irrigation system to a semi-natural condition, which is being achieved by increasing the level of the ground water.
