This September we are launching a two-month nation-wide communication campaign for environmental protection, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation in Ukraine – the issues included into the UN Sustainable Development Agenda to be implemented by 2030.

The Sustainable Development Goals are aimed to boost economic growth and well-being, to raise living standards and find sustainable solutions to reduce the negative human footprint on the environment, including lowering the level of natural resources consumption and emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.

The campaign’s goal is drawing attention of Ukrainians to specific environmental issues and raising awareness about the threats posed by biodiversity loss and the climate change effects. This includes precipitation decrease in arid areas that leads to soil deterioration and desertification, and sea level rise that affects the infrastructure in many countries. Climate change also triggers social conflicts and puts the food security at risk.

300 information city-lights featuring key environmental challenges were placed in the cities of all regions of Ukraine.

Within the communication campaign, we will also organize a social media campaign and a contest. Details of the contest will soon be announced on our Facebook page.

This campaign is being organized in cooperation with BigBoard Ukraine Group and with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility.

Background:

The campaign is launched in the framework of the GEF-funded UNDP project "Integrating Rio Conventions Provisions into Ukraine’s National Policy Framework" focused on integrating the provisions of the three Rio Conventions - Convention on Biological Diversity, Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought, and Framework Convention on Climate Change into the country’s broader national development framework and enhancing capacities to meet and sustain the commitments under the Conventions.
