20 September 2017, Starobilsk – A bridge over Aidar River, repaired by the UN Development Programme in Ukraine (UNDP) with financial support from the government of Japan, is an important transport and logistical artery connecting Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts. Its restoration will improve logistics within the region and beyond.

The bridge is located in Starobilsk at an important section of a national R-07 highway that stretches across the entire north of Luhansk оblast, connecting its northeast and northwest areas with Kharkiv оblast.

The 250-meter-long bridge was originally built in 1965 and due to the long-term use, the heavy-duty military machinery movement and an explosion in summer 2014, it was severely damaged. Due to this, motor traffic on the bridge was limited for safety concerns.

In May 2017, the UNDP, with financial support from the government of Japan, started restoration works. As a result, iron-concrete beams were replaced and span structures of the bridge have been reinforced. The construction company worked on protecting on  metal constructions from corrosion and renovated 200 square metres of road surface. Additionally, a new energy-saving lighting system was installed. The reconstruction work budget amounted to USD 227 000.

It is estimated, that renovation of the bridge will increase its transportation  capacity to 10,000 vehicles per day. This is expected to result in boosting manufacturing  in the area, the creation of additional jobs at local enterprises, and the restoration of disrupted interregional economic links.

“Rehabilitated infrastructure will help the region to return to normal life, recover from the conflict and spur economic development, - said Mustafa Sayt-Ametov, Coordinator of the United Nations Recovery and Development Programme. - In particular, convenient transport connections are important for establishing economic relations within the region, as well as with other regions of Ukraine. For example, this bridge connects the North-East part with the Western part of Luhansk region, as well as with Kharkiv оblast.”

The UNDP Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme, with support from the government of Japan, has reconstructed 30 socio-economic infrastructure facilities in Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts since 2015: bridges, pump stations, healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, schools, etc. Another 12 infrastructure facilities are under reconstruction.
