Kyiv, September 21-22, 2017 – How to improve energy efficiency in education facilities? How to protect the environment by using the bioenergy technologies? What measures can lead to the achievement of these goals? These issues were in the focus of the Ukrainian conference “Energy Efficiency School”, organized by the United Nations Development Program with financial support from the Global Environment Facility. The Forum gathered educators of out-of-school and general education institutions, governmental officials, representatives of local authorities, business and environmental organizations.

Over the two days, participants learnt more about the energy efficiency technologies and the potential of the use of bioenergy resources in Ukraine, familiarized with the financial and economic opportunities for implementation of bioenergy projects at national and local levels as well as exchanged thoughts and practical experience on the ways how to enforce the energy savings and energy efficiency measures. The “Energy Efficiency School” featured round table discussions, plenary sessions, trainings and the excursion “Solid Fuel Boilers in Educational Facilities” along with a demonstration of the videos, presenting the use of renewable energy sources and the possibilities for Ukraine’s transition to alternative energy.

“The environmental education of school students, based on the world modern trends and supported by a demonstration of some innovative examples of energy efficiency measures and friendly attitude towards the environment, is the ground not only for the successful future of each student, but also for the well-being and energy security of the entire nation. The examples could involve the use of biofuel boilers, which leads to the financial savings, energy independence, environmental impact reduction as well as climate change prevention," says Olena Maslyukivska-Samberg, UNDP Environment and Sustainable Development Portfolio Analyst.

During the thematic exhibition “Energy Efficiency School”, educational and out-of-school institutions, scientific establishments and public organizations shared the main achievements of their work. The specific business area “Teacher’s Practical Action Card” also enabled each participant to present the activities of their educational institution or organization.

The event was organized under the implementation of UNDP in Ukraine project “Development and Commercialization of Bioenergy Technologies in the Municipal Sector in Ukraine” and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Youth National Ecological and Naturalistic Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as well as the Ukrainian Ecological League.
