Countering money extortion from patients by establishing transparent tools of collecting donations in healthcare facilities in the city of Poltava

July 29, 2019

During 2014-2016, the Institute of Analysis and Advocacy conducted a thorough structured research of informal payments in health facilities in 18 oblasts of Ukraine. The findings showed a widespread practice of informal financial relationships between patients and doctors and an extensive system of corruption schemes, especially with regard to charitable foundations that collect donations from patients in healthcare facilities.

In 2018 the Institute of Analysis and Advocacy, which belongs to the CSO-hubs network, launched and successfully implemented advocacy campaign, aimed at  countering money extortion from patients of healthcare facilities in the city of Poltava by establishing transparent tools of collecting donations.

The lessons learnt and brief description of the campaign are presented in this publication.

The advocacy campaign has been implemented within UNDP’s “Civil Society for Enhanced Democracy and Human Rights in Ukraine” project, financed by Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
