An open SDG platform in Ukraine will provide access to national SDG implementation indicators for the government and the world community

Kyiv, 20 December 2021 – Today, the UN development system together with the representatives of the Government of Ukraine presented to public and international partners an open online platform for monitoring of sustainable development goal (SDG) indicators.

The platform was developed by the State Statistics Service with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) support under the United Nations Joint Programme on SDG financing.

The SDG Open Platform is a tool that will collect, disseminate, and track national data on SDG indicators in Ukraine, including identifying data gaps and improving access to official statistics and metadata. Through the platform, the government and international partners will be able to monitor the achieving of the SDGs in Ukraine. The platform will be administered by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.

During the meeting, Deputy State Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Anatoliy Kutsevol stressed that during the pandemic and natural disasters it is extremely important to ensure there is continued progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Ukraine.

"Progress towards the SDGs is a manifestation of the country's high level of commitment to international obligations,” he said.

“Over the past five years, Ukraine has made progress in 15 of the 17 SDGs, with poverty falling from 58.3 percent in 2015 to 43.2 percent in 2018. This has been achieved through a coordinated partnership between all stakeholders to implement the SDGs.

But to continue on the path of progress, it is important to provide access to national indicators and data on SDG performance for politicians and decision-makers, researchers, civil society and the world community to improve the quality of life for future generations."

In turn, UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Osnat Lubrani noted that achieving the sustainable development goals adopted by the UN in 2015 and shaping the international agenda is an ambitious goal that requires coordinated partnership between all countries.

“Reliable and disaggregated data is very important for strengthening the evidence base for more informed policies and more effective strategic planning,” Lubrani said.

“We cannot change what we do not measure, therefore, measurement of SDG progress is a key accelerator to achieve SDGs and improve accountability of all stakeholders.

“And we are very grateful to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine for our long-term partnership aimed at increasing internal capacity and improving national statistics related to the implementation of the SDGs at the national and subnational levels.”

The head of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine Ihor Werner noted during the event that the State Statistics Service understands the importance of Ukraine's Sustainable Development Goals and is always ready to help to systematize and visualize available information to improve progress towards sustainable development in Ukraine.

"The State Statistics Service of Ukraine provides and will continue to support the development of the national SDGs platform in Ukraine, which is now hosted on the state domain and will be administered by us," Werner said.

This platform will provide ordinary citizens with full access to updated visual information on Ukraine’s monitoring of its sustainable development. We’re glad that we can be a part of this process”.

The Open SDG platform was created by the UK Office for National Statistics in collaboration with the Centre for Open Data Enterprise and members of the Open SDG community. It provides a convenient way to work with national indicators and data on sustainable development goals for representatives of other countries. Today, the platform includes dozens of countries, and now, thanks to UNDP support, Ukraine has joined them.
