As Ukraine’s international partners supporting the judicial reforms in Ukraine, we welcome today’s establishment of the Ethics Council by law.

The Ethics Council will undertake an important task of reviewing the integrity of the High Council of Justice members – the highest judicial governance body in Ukraine.

The establishment of the Ethics Council is an important step of the Judicial Reform Strategy approved by the President of Ukraine in June 2021 and it is also required by the Law on the Reform of the High Council of Justice passed by the Verkhovna Rada in July 2021.

Three international experts – retired high-ranking judges from the USA and the UK and a former General Prosecutor of Estonia - will work together with three Ukrainian judges in the Ethics Council to promote judicial integrity, a key demand of Ukrainian citizens and both the Ukrainian and international business community.

We look forward to supporting the noble mission of the Ethics Council and further supporting Ukraine's efforts for a comprehensive, holistic judicial reform by providing our full policy and technical assistance.
